Obtain your NIF in person
It is important to inform you that the standard way to obtain a NIF number is to go to the nearest Tax Office (Finanças) and request it in person. This path is completely free. Since July 2022, non-EU/EEA residents do not need a tax representative to apply for and maintain a TIN, although this can still make the process of obtaining a TIN easier.
1. Organize the necessary documents: You will need your passport and also proof of address from your country of origin.
2. Obtain proof of address from your home country: Bring a bank statement or some other document that indicates your non-Portuguese address in English or Portuguese (it must contain your name and full address).
3. Find the nearest "Finanças": Check on Google Maps for the nearest service point. If you are located in the center of a large city (Lisbon or Porto), your department may have long queues. You can go to any other branch, even a branch in a small town where there may be shorter queues.
4. Get your NIF: Select “NIF” or “Consultar Gestor” in the electronic queues table. Let them know that you want to register for a NIF. Most staff speak at least basic English and will be able to assist you if necessary.
5. Get your password and log in to your account on the tax office portal: Let them know that you need the password to log into your account on the tax office portal. You will have the opportunity to change it online for your account later.
